From 1975-1984 the National Alpine Ski Team downhill squad of Ken Read, Steve Podborski, Dave Irwin and Dave Murray (and originally Jim Hunter) proved themselves equal to Europe's best downhill skiers. Known as the 'Crazy Canucks' for their daring, all-out style, they were soon emulated by European skiers. They were reckless yet with world class skills earning a total of 107 top ten World Cup finishes from 1978 to 1984, 39 of these being in the top 3. The Crazy Canucks were a cultural phenomenon, their exploits established Canada as a serious competitor in international competition.
