The information in this e-mail will be reproduced on the CSHOFM's website, as will summaries of proposals.
What the CSHOFM is looking for?
- 4000+ square feet of climate-controlled, easily accessible, exhibit, storage and office space, preferably in a high traffic area attractive to skiers of all disciplines and others interested in the history of skiing.
- Significant revenue and in kind contribution to contribute to the projected annual operating costs of $250,000.
- Premises ready for opening by fall 2012.
What is the process?
The process is designed to be simple and transparent so that proponents can work with the CSHOFM to develop practical proposals as efficiently as possible.
Proponents should begin by contacting the Chair of the Task Force on the Future of the CSHOFM, Chris Edgell, at the coordinates below.
Summaries of proposals will be posted on the CSHOFM website.
Since the CSHOFM would like to be in new premises by the fall of 2012, it would like to receive all proposals by the end of 2011. However, Additional time is being allowed to the end of February 2012.
Have any proposals been received so far?
We have received serious expressions of interest and proposals are being developed by interested groups.
The proposals will be assessed by the Task Force and the Board of Directors will endorse the winning proposal or proposals.
In the spirit of encompassing the Canadian History of Skiing and its breadth across our country, it may be feasible to endorse an inclusive plan which will enable Eastern and Western proposals to coordinate with each other in a meaningful way.
Various members of the Board of the CSHOFM (see list of BOD below) have been approached informally by some ski areas in the eastern and western Canada, but no formal proposal has yet been developed and submitted

Among his many roles were cross-country Head Coach and Technical Director for Cross Country Canada, Master Coach for Cross Country Ontario, and founder and coach of the Pakenham Ski Club. Over the many years he devoted to excellence in cross-country skiing Heinz shaped the athletic careers many members of Canada's National Team.
Hugh Smythe, of Whistler, BC, is a visionary in the ski development business. Starting out as a professional ski patroller at Whistler Mountain in 1966, he went on to become Mountain Manager there, President of Blackcomb, and as a senior executive at Intrawest, he was responsible for virtually all operations at some 10 major ski areas in Canada and the US. Winner of many awards, Hugh's skill and commitment to excellence has had a major impact in Canada and the US on the efficiency of ski lift operations, customer service, and on the number of active skiers.
Jimmie Spencer, of Vernon BC, has played a pivotal role in the growth of the ski industry in western Canada and throughout the country. INDUCTEES - 2010
Laurie Kreiner, of Timmins, Ontario, named to the Canadian Alpine Ski Team at age 14, went on to establish an outstanding Canadian and international competitive record, including impressive results in Olympic and World Cup competition. In the 35 years since retiring from competition, Laurie has continued to make major contributions to skiing in Canada and internationally. She has been a ski resort director, owner and operator, coach, instructor, advisor, ambassador, and volunteer. In these diverse roles she is widely recognized for her contributions as leader, team player, motivator, and as a compassionate person with impressive will and ability to help those in need.
Mark Labow, of St-Sauveur-des-Monts, has been a driving force in the development and success of the Canadian Ski Patrol System (CSPS) and the Fédération Internationale des Patrouilles de Ski (FIPS). During his 63 years with the CSPS, Mark has held many leadership positions, including National President from 1969 to 1975, and (founding) president of FIPS from 1975 to 2003. Mark was also instrumental in the establishment of the Canadian Ski Council which represents most of Canada's major ski organizations. Mark's outstanding volunteer contributions have been recognized through the numerous awards within the CFPS, as well as the Queen's Silver Jubilee medal (1977), membership in the Laurentian Ski Hall of Fame, and honorary membership in the ski patrol systems of the United States, Australia and France.
Beckie Scott, of Canmore Alberta, is Canada's most successful nordic skier, and one of the world's best all-round cross country skiers. In addition to her outstanding competitive record, Beckie has been a leader in international sport, where her achievements include spearheading efforts to establish an independent drug-testing agency that become the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA). Recognition of Beckie's major contributions to Canadian and international sport, is reflected in her numerous honours and awards, including the John Semmelink Memorial Award, the Governor General's Award for meritorious service, and membership in the Canadian and Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.
The 2011 AGM was honoured by the presence of Senator Nancy Greene Raine, a Life Member and active supporter of the Canadian Ski Museum/Canadian Ski Hall of Fame. Nancy played an active part in the meeting, and offered practical advice and strong encouragement for continuing to pursue our mission with determination.
The AGM was also privileged to have the participation of members and friends from outside the National Capital Region.
The AGM passed a special resolution to change our name from the Canadian Ski Museum, to the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame and Museum. This resolution endorsed a similar resolution passed by the Board of Directors at their meeting on March 23.
The next steps are to apply to Industry Canada for approval of the name change, and to obtain confirmation from the Canada Revenue Agency that the name change would not affect our status as a charitable organization with the authority to issue tax receipts for donations.
The AGM also re-elected the slate of directors identified on the last slide of the PowerPoint presentation that you may view by clicking the appropriate item below. The presentation constitutes the report to the AGM, and includes both slides and notes.
Members wishing to obtain a copy of the financial statements of the Museum/Hall of Fame should contact Robin Cushnie, preferably by e-mail.
Chris Edgell, head of the task force on the financial sustainability of the Museum/Hall of Fame, and former Chair, made an extensive and inspiring presentation and reporting on the progress and future directions of the Museum/Hall of Fame.
Many thanks for all those who attended and participated.
